Aberdeen

The canalization of the Tenn-Tom left a lot of old river runs and some great bass fishing in three main fishing pools along the waterway.

The uppermost is Aberdeen, which, at 4,100 acres, is one of the premier May destinations for bass fishermen in the state of Mississippi. Bring a push pole. You'll need it because you will be spending your time in the sloughs off the old river runs and they are shallow and filled with cover.

All Aberdeen is a couple of old river runs with a bunch of connected sloughs The best sloughs are Vine's Branch, Buzzard Wing and Moccasin Creek. The best old river run is Becker's.

The key is finding the sloughs or river runs with the best concentrations of feeding fish and then identifying the productive pattern, such as whether the fish relating to grass are eating better than those on timber.

Fishing Reports

4/29/2008

The crappie reports this past week are still pretty good. Anglers are hitting the grass and the timber with equal success. Best depths have been 3 to 4 ft; crappie jigs are out producing minnows. The bass reports have been few; numbers of bass in the 11 to 13 inch range are fairly easy; quality bass over 5 lbs have been difficult to come by. Most bass are being caught out of shallow water in the sloughs using t-rigged plastics and spinnerbaits. The catfish anglers are reporting some success in the old river runs using rod-n-reels or trotlines.

Water clarity has started to improve this past week. The bass reports over the weekend were pretty good; it took 17 lbs to win a local tourney last weekend. Most bass were caught on spinner baits and t-rigged plastics in the backs of the sloughs. The crappie bite also improved in the sloughs and shallow pockets off the main channel. The crappie are being caught in water as shallow as 2 feet. Target shallow wood or grass for best results; jigs or minnows are both catching fish. The catfish bite slowed somewhat, but anglers are still reporting that good numbers are being caught with rod-n-reels at the mouth (and just downstream) of the old river. Night crawlers and cut bait have been best baits.

8/7/2007

Most folks are fishing early and late. The bass reports are coming from structure along the channel; most anglers were throwing spinner baits and t-rigged plastics at shallow wood and lay downs adjacent to the channel. Other bass reports are coming from the sloughs; an early morning bite is being reported on buzz baits and spinner baits. A few other reports continue to come from the riprap above Hwy. 278; spinner baits and t-rigged plastics have been best baits. The catfish reports have been fair; most catfish are being caught on trotlines fished off the channel and in the old river runs. The few crappie reports have been fair to slow; crappie anglers are fishing the old river runs and targeting the deeper banks with minnows.

7/7/2007

The bass bite has been pretty much the same this week as the previous couple of weeks. The bass reports are coming from structure along the channel; most anglers were throwing crank baits and t-rigged plastics at shallow wood and lay downs along the channel. A few other reports from the riprap above Hwy. 278; spinner baits and plastics have been catching most of those bass. The bite in the sloughs are few, but usually quality bites, especially the top water bite. The catfish anglers are reporting success with rod-n-reels and also jugs. Cuts and creeks off the channel are best areas for rod-n-reel action; the upper end of the channel near the old river has been popular with the jug fishermen. The crappie anglers are targeting standing timber in the sloughs and also fishing lay downs on the channel with some success. Both jigs and minnows are working equally well.

The bass reports are still good to fair. It took around 18 lbs to win a local tourney this past Saturday. Most bass anglers are reporting an early top water bite in the sloughs; after that, most action is coming in the deeper backwater areas and also along structure on the navigation channel. A few anglers are still reporting some nice catches off the riprap above Hwy. 278. Buzz baits and t-rigged plastics are best baits; shallow crank baits and spinner baits are good choices along the channel. The catfish anglers are reporting success with rod-n-reels and jugs. Cuts and creeks off the channel are best areas for rod-n-reel action; the upper end of the channel near the old river has been popular with the jug fishermen. There were few crappie reports this past week; anglers are hitting the standing timber in the sloughs and also fishing lay downs on the channel. Both jigs and minnows are working equally well.
