During the period of 1930 - 1933 the present Main Protection Levee was constructed as was the Mississippi River cutoff that created Lake Ferguson. Lake Ferguson is the home of Greenville's casinos, but also features great fishing and outdoor fun. The waterfront is often the center of the city as the lake hosts numerous holiday celebrations, community events and regional fishing tournaments. In Ferguson, which has served as a major river port for centuries, that cover is plentiful. It ranges from natural cover like standing timber or sand bars and points, to manmade and man-discarded stuff that ranges from sunken barges and old grain loading equipment, to rock piles and sunken brush to boat piers. That latter category also includes even casinos! 4/21/2008
WARNING: ALL TRAFFIC ON THE
MISSISSIPPI RIVER LEVEES ARE RESTRICTED TO AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL AT THIS TIME.
PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ACCESS THE RIVER UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.
According to Terry Bates at
Big River Guide Service (662-390-3886) the river is up very high - Too high for
fishermen. The lake is at flood stage and is already flooding some homes. Law
enforcement officials recommend that anglers find another lake to fish.
For the weekend of April 25
the River level near Lake Ferguson is predicted to be 57.0 feet (Greenville
gage) holding steady. Go to rivergages.com for a web site with current water
level predictions.
BREAM - For Bream try
fishing around rocky banks, boats ramps, rock piles, medal barge piling, and
alongside permanent work barges. Fish with crickets and worms. BASS - In deeper
water, 8 to 12 feet, try using a Berkley 10" power worm or 10" Gulp turtle back
worm, a Carolina Rig with 5"-6" lizard's, shaky head worm in watermelon candy,
or green pumpkin candy. This little worm is a lot of fun to fish, it usually
will catch a lot of fish, and if it’s a tuff day, it’ll catch fish when nothing
else will. CATFISH - Catfish will continue to hang around the grain elevators.
If anyone would like to go fishing in the Greenville area or need more
information, call Terry Bates at Big River Guide Service at 662/390/3886. Good

According to Terry Bates at Big River Guide Service at 662/332/3341, or
662/390/3886, fishing on Lake Ferguson has been good for bream, bass and
catfish. Bream were being caught around steel barges and pilings, or the old
sunk wood barges or rocky points. During the day fish 6-7' deep water for bream.
For Bass try fishing deep running crank baits on rocky humps or points, 10-15
feet deep. One can also try fishing 10" berkely power worms, Carolina rigs or
jigs with plastic trailers. Real good catches of Catfish (1/2 - 2 pound) are
being made fishing around the grain elevators: Fish on the bottom in water 15-20
feet deep. For crappie try Lake Lee - trolling along poles. 7/7/2007
