Locks along the Tenn-Tom are scheduled to be closed for what the Army Corps. of Engineers are calling "Major Lock Maintenance" from 2008-2012. Three locks are scheduled for closure, tentatively, in September or October 2008. These locks are Whitten, Fulton, and Stennis. Three more locks, Aberdeen, Amory, and Montgomery are scheduled for closure in 2009. Wilkins and Rankin are Scheduled for 2010. Whitten is scheduled for maintenance again in 2011 along with Bevill and Heflin. A Civil Engineer from the Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway Operations Office said, "Closures are tentatively scheduled for sometime in September or October 2008.  Major closures usually result in a lock being closed for a period of about two weeks; therefore, whenever we have more than one closure in a given year, we try to schedule them to take place at the same time (to minimize overall waterway closure time, and corresponding impacts to waterway users)." There is no word yet, on what kind of maintenance is going to be done to the locks. For a downloadable schedule of future lock closures...Click Here.
